The castle
For almost 60 years it was more or less abandoned until 1984 when the General Council bought the property to protect the cultural heritage which has also been classified as being a historical monument. The restoration of the castle for nearly 15 years finally allowed visitors to discover the
Renaissance castle with its surprising colours
. The square shaped structure has a central courtyard with a tower on each corner and walls made of bricks alternating with stone. The restored façade once again shows its former colours: a surprising pink and white striped appearance which is even more sublime during summer sunsets.
Inside, a monumental fireplace exemplifies a challenge of construction. In the central courtyard, two wings have upstairs covered walkways built under their archways adding to the beautiful symmetry.
The grounds and formal gardens
Spreading out from the foot of the Renaissance castle is a French formal garden. Lawns edged with box hedge, a series of terraces, lanes of lime trees are arranged around a 60 acre park including 11 acres of lawn. The former orchards are coming back to life… thanks to the twenty or so species of fruit trees and six different kinds of grapes recently planted. Almond Princess trees, sweet “cœur de pigeon” cherry trees, vineyard peach trees or vineyards with white table grapes, pleasantly add to the ground’s setting.
