Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, one site…over centuries
It’s through the Roman ruins of Lugdunum dating from
Antiquity
that your travel back in time begins. Temple, forum, theatre, hot springs and a buzzing marketplace that continues to show the effervescence of a town having over 10,000 inhabitants during the first half of the 2nd Century.
From there you enter into the
medieval city
of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. The half-timbered houses dating from the 15th and 16th Centuries continue to show the former greatness of this Episcopal see. From here push the heavy door of the Saint Mary’s Cathedral open. It’s one of the pilgrimage stops on the road to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. (Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle). The roman-gothic architecture is elegant, Renaissance stained glass windows with the
remarkable sculpted choir stalls
and an organ from the 16th Century, an intimate Roman cloister…
At the foot of the upper part of town, the 12th century
Saint-Just-de-Valcabrère basilica
is a particularly beautiful example of Pyrenean Roman art. Its sober elegance continues to surprise visitors along with the numerous stones reused in its construction which came from the nearby town ruins dating from Antiquity.
